Without freedom of expression we will never reconcile the comparatively small differences between one nationality and another, one race and another, one sex and another, the you and the old, the rich and the poor ad infinitum. -Joseph Brown

Can you believe that in May 2007 it will be thirty years since Joseph Brown retired from Princeton University! He began his career in 1937, hired as boxing coach, and retired in 1977 after a successful coaching and teaching career. During his thirty years, he created over 300 of the most magnificent sculptures depicting mostly athletics. His collection also contains many portraits and figurative sculptures of prominent individuals, various female figures and several sculpture monuments.

To celebrate this milestone, a two-day Joseph Brown sculpture exhibit is scheduled for Reunion Weekend, Friday June 1 st and Saturday June 2nd . (Look for advertisements in the Princeton Alumni Weekly and the Reunion Guides.) To commemorate Joe's thirty years, I am compiling a collection of stories about Joseph Brown from people like you who knew him during his time at Princeton as a teacher, coach, and friend. I will compile all the writings I receive in a booklet organized by decades starting with 1930's and ending with the 1970's. The booklet will be available for the first time at the exhibit. However, it can only be available if we are able to count on your support in sharing your story and encouraging family members and former classmates who knew Joseph Brown to share their story.

A nominal fee may be charged for the booklet to cover the cost of printing and to raise funds to continue the printing of new entries to the booklet. Currently, we are not able to calculate the cost of the booklet as we do not know how many entries we will receive. If you check the website during the first week of May 2007 you can reserve your copy and pick it up at the exhibit or you can order a copy and have it sent to you.

Please consider sharing your story to help make this booklet. I believe this booklet will provide the opportunity to know Joseph Brown as a teacher, coach, and friend. If you have any questions, you can call me at (908) 359-8582 or via email.

Sincerely,

Janine Maslyn
