Without freedom of expression we will never reconcile the comparatively small differences between one nationality and another, one race and another, one sex and another, the you and the old, the rich and the poor ad infinitum. -Joseph Brown

About Our Organization > History and Purpose of the Organization

The Monument to Freedom of Expression Foundation, Inc. (MTFOE) is a non-profit educational foundation dedicated to continuing the dream that Joseph Brown had for his life, his sculptures and his desire to educate the public in the sculpture process. MTFOE celebrates the harmony of sculpture and education by offering the opportunity to experience sculpture through viewing his collection, creating sculpture and learning the step-by-step processes involved with making sculpture.

MTFOE was founded in May 2003 by Timothy Maslyn who first apprenticed then assisted Joseph Brown, after Joe retired from Princeton University. He was then designated curator of the Joseph Brown sculpture collection and continues offering his knowledge and insight into Joseph Brown and his sculptures. It has always been a dream of Timothy Maslyn to create an organization that would offer the world the opportunity to again discover Joseph Brown, his sculptures and the achievements of this great individual and artist.

MTFOE is committed to achieving four goals. These four goals are to:

1. Introduce Joseph Brown - athlete, artist, and educator to a new generation who will find his life captivating and his sculptures fascinating as did those in his generation.

2. Offer a variety of educational sculpture programs such as, classes, workshops, lectures along with hands-on sculpture demonstrations for all ages and abilities.

3. Acquire a permanent space where the sculptures of Joseph Brown can be exhibited to the public as well as providing the opportunity for organizations and individuals to exhibit selected sculptures from the collection at other locations.

4. Operate a "Working/Teaching" studio, as part of the permanent space, where the public can experience the sculpture process by creating sculpture and learn about sculpture process.

Few modern American sculptors have achieved what Joseph Brown has achieved in his lifetime - a life story that captivates any audience and a collection of sculpture that is truly unmatched by any other American sculptor in modern times.

MTFOE is about bringing awareness to the life of Joseph Brown and his extraordinary contribution to the world of art. By celebrating harmony of sculpture and education, Joseph Brown's dream becomes a reality and celebrates his life!
