Football > Tackle The 16 foot bronze version of this sculpture was the second of the Veteran’s Stadium sculptures. It was installed in April 1976. Tackle is composed of two figures, one carrying the football, the other trying to stop him from advancing. Both are physically powerful men; the ball carrier has the ball cradled in his right arm and he is inclined forward, driving off his right leg. The defensive man, heavier than the runner, has planted his left shoulder in the ball-carrier’s middle as he wraps hi arms around him and drives off his left leg. Since the form in each case is technically correct, the result depends on an intangible factor. If the tackler drives forward from his left foot with greater spirit than the ball-carrier, he’ll bring him down; if the runner drives from his right foot with more spirit, he’ll break the tackle.
Year: 1976
