Football > Punter

The 16 foot bronze version of this sculpture was the first of the Veteran’s Stadium sculptures. It was installed in January 1975.

Joe first did this sketch in 1935. During the 1930’s Joe did a series of boxers, football and baseball players. The punter has a lot to be concerned about: Is the ball going where he wants it to go? What is the receiver going to do when he catches it? What is unique about the “Punter’s” uniform is chronologically a mixture. His sock are old- style woolen, his pants, jersey, and shoes are new style, the face mask is purposely left off because it was mechanical-looking and obscured something more expressive-his face; the pads are treated so that he ends up a mixture of armor and anatomy that spans fifty as Joe knew football.
